1. Reason for Being

Human activity has fundamentally changed our planet. We now live in a new epoch called the Anthropocene - The Age of Humans. Our impact has been global, damaging, and irreversible. Never has Earth been so affected by one species. What are we changing Earth into? What do we want to change it into? Alter Atlas was founded in direct response to this because we believe when something we do has a planetary consequence, it is worth moving forward in a better direction. We exist to create the world we want to live in. We donate our time, energy and 1% of all revenue to like-minded, grassroots groups who are working hard to make the world a better place. What we do now in response to what we now know will define what it means to be human in The Age of Humans. Everything unites us.

2. Change + Courage + Hope

We're an ambitious and optimistic force of hope. We may not be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but we choose to have the audacity to aim for it anyway. Without courage there is no creativity. In a climate of short-sighted and short-term players, we develop Alter Atlas with a long-term view because we want to build something meaningful and purposeful. Something that lasts. And we're not afraid of change or to constantly reinvent the company. This kind of long-term perspective is needed more widely in the world - This kind of perspective lays the foundation for hope. We believe it's those of us who stay at it, those who do the long, hard, committed work of change that gradually bends the arc of history in the right direction, and make the most lasting difference.

3. The Activist Company

The building and construction industry is one of the key sources of global waste and pollution. We believe we have a responsibility to reduce the industry's harmful impact. At Alter Atlas, environmental, social and cultural sustainability is not what we do after hours. It's the reason we're in business. We cannot claim to be the most responsible company. We don't do everything that an environmentally conscious company can do, nor does anyone else we know. But we can tell you what we stand for, why we stand for it, and what we're doing about our responsibilities. Through continuous improvement, with the support of our clients and by taking one step at a time, we aim to become the best company a company can be.

4. Environmental Impact

We measure our success on whether we have delivered desirable designs and solutions while reducing our impact on the environment. This means auditing the materials, processes and suppliers we use, examining how resources are used for the entire life-cycle of our projects and taking responsibility rather than saying 'that's someone else's job'. We believe good design, good business and environmental sustainability are one and the same.

5. Everything Unites Us

At Alter Atlas, we recognise ourselves in each other and believe unity is achieved by learning to work together in spite of differences, rather than insisting on unity without differences. We believe one person's struggle is all of our struggles - and this spirit cultivates an atmosphere of openness, trust, and mutual respect which we believe is a prerequisite for creativity and innovation. The development of architectural propositions in conjunction with other disciplines allows for contextual attitudes and ideas to have more pragmatic and enduring impact. The uniqueness of each discipline is sought after, embraced and absorbed to form one united and communal force instead of a web of individuals. We believe in continuously learning from one another and grapple with challenges by truly working together.
